How does the word counter decide what a word is?
A word is a run of letters or digits. Apostrophes and hyphens inside a word are kept, so "don't" and "well-known" each count as one word. Standalone punctuation and symbols are not counted.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time divides the word count by 238 words per minute, a commonly cited average for silent reading of non-fiction. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute. Both are estimates; real speed depends on the reader and the text.
What is the difference between characters and characters without spaces?
Characters counts every character including spaces, tabs and line breaks. Characters without spaces leaves out all whitespace. Platforms with length limits usually count the first number.
